Senior Climate and Environment Policy Specialist

Dr. Arun Bhakta Shrestha is a senior specialist with about 30 years of experience in climate change, cryosphere processes, water resources, and disaster risk reduction. Renowned for his expertise in glacial hazard assessment, early warning systems, and integrated river basin management, Arun has worked extensively across the Hindu Kush Himalaya since the early 1990s. He has led pioneering efforts in high-altitude snow and glacier monitoring and played a key role in landmark GLOF risk reduction initiatives of the Government of Nepal. As a former Strategic Group Lead at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), he provided leadership for regional programmes on cryosphere and water risks and air quality. Arun is passionate about translating science into policy-relevant solutions and strengthening institutional capacity and fostering transboundary collaboration for climate resilience.
